“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” - Hippocrates
Our small horticultural organic farm and orchard allows our guests to literally and figuratively "get their hands dirty" as they rediscover and appreciate the miracle of real food, where it comes from, what it tastes like, and how to reintroduce it into their lives back home. Depending on the season, guests will have opportunities to work on the farm, from planting, watering/weeding, and harvesting, to learning ways to create simple and delicious meals during interactive cooking demonstrations.

Apply for an Internship at the Farm
Apply below for a paid WALDEN farm internship (usually mid-May through mid-August or early-mid September). The total length of this 20-hour per/week internship is 12 weeks on average. Compensation includes a flat stipend of $2500 per intern. Our goal is to grow organic vegetables, herbs, berries, and fruit trees as a part of our Food as Medicine program. Our Internship is best suited to someone with some organic gardening/farming experience who wants to take a leadership role, broaden his or her skills and knowledge, and help us maintain and sustain our program so it may continue year after year. Strong candidates will be expected to follow instructions and abide by our safety and risk management standards, be reliable, flexible, self-starting, creative, focused, and able to both work independently as well as part of a team.
Under the guidance of our facility manager and other True North Treks staff, each week interns will review which tasks need to be accomplished and set target times and goals for each job's completion. Interns are expected to work regardless of weather conditions, unless personal safety is an issue. Because small-scale organic gardening requires a great deal of manual labor, candidates should be physically fit, able to lift 50 lbs, and be expected to work on their feet for a full day. An ability to work with people of all ages is a must. A background check (conducted by True North Treks) and a valid driver's license is required.
General responsibilities include:
-Building and installing raised bed garden boxes, hoop house, infrastructure and watering system
-Growing and transplanting seedlings
-Weeding, plant care, and general field work
-Harvesting and washing of crops
-Record keeping and regular communication with team members
-General help and assistance around the WALDEN Institute property (e.g., mowing, raking, trail making/clearing) when farm duties are complete.
Other Information
-Should live near Au Train, Michigan and have own transportation to drive to/from the property. Lodging on the property is not an option.
-Educational opportunities are provided by True North Treks in the areas of Food as Medicine, mindfulness meditation, positive health and lifestyle behaviors, and cancer prevention.
